New layer of annoying ads I've not seen before, any way to block this shit? Using the word "free" or "sample" in a post automatically adds a hyperlink to horrid pop-up adverts.

Originally, I had typed "are you free Monday", and the word 'free' brought up some free sample page. I edited 'free' to 'available'. Now, the word 'hosting' is linking to this. It's popping up all over, now the status feed is doing it too. -_-

It's one of those things that turn up from time to time when they're not supposed to, and not everyone can see them. For example, QD often ran into ads that expanded and filled most of the screen, but as I recall, none of the staff ever ran into them. A lot of these things are client-side, meaning they'll only be seen by the person reporting it.

Basically, it's an ad that places a false link on a word that relates to whatever they're advertizing. They tend to turn up on lower-security sites, so it's odd to have one here.

Edit: My Collusion add-on for Firefox connects that site to two marketing sites; one Google-based and 404'd, the other blatant spam garbage. I put in a fake email address on the site in that link, and immediately picked up a lot more shit. Just generic spam.

I advise getting some type of ad blocker, and if you're using Internet Explorer, switching to Firefox to more easily acquire fixes for ads and spam. IE is shit, anyway.

No, it was on the server side. Ipads cant get adware... Treefitty fixed that.

Gtagrl probably has adware on her laptop, most likely from a toolbar that was bundled with some software she downloaded off the internet....

you can bookmark them just like safari though... the only issue i have with chrome is it crashes every now and then, but it also recovers... and yea, i occassionally get an ad pop up that directs me to another website...

and before you say it, yea i know, ad-blocker... but that doesn't solve the problem for those without...

Bones had the same problem

Ad aware used to be good for antispyware, but now its whored up the last time i used it, so idk.

Malware Bytes and Microsoft Security Centre, Avira, Avast, Nod32 (pick one of these 4)

AdAware was awesome back in 2007 but now it's a total ram whore and isn't even that good.

But those I suggested are practically unbeatable, I use a custom firewall (Comodo) and NoScript in firefox that makes me enable everything on a page (it isn;t exactly a lengthy process and as scripts you blocked are remembered across website)

Okay, thanks for the good advice. I'll check my system and see if I can trace it back to the offending source.

If you're using google chrome check the extensions sometimes a downloaded program will install extensions that will do this. Same for FireFox.

I've been using Malwarebytes for years and it's never let me down. I usually use Firefox but had IE open the other day, don't like Chrome, it's shit. I've run full scans but nothing's turned up yet, and I can't recall downloading anything lately that it could have piggybacked in on, but then I'm not the only one who uses it...haven't found it yet, will do some more digging.

I had the same problem the other day - I just checked my recent downloads and found the culprit, CouponDropDown, which had attached itself to something called Web Assistant by Incredibar. I uninstalled it through the Manage Add-ons option on IE. I have no idea where that shit came from either - probably my son looking at porn...
