Does anyone here actually remember life without the internet?

Recommended Posts

I first got internet I was eleven or so. Proud to say that gta-sanandreas.com was the first forum I ever joined, and the first site I visited regularly. No fucking idea what I did for five years before that.

Errmm, can't remember when I first used the internet. Would have been 12 or so. Didn't start using it regularly til I was 14ish (9 years ago). I remember before having the internet that Jazz Jack Rabbit was the shit. Aside from that I didn't use the computer much...still don't, compared to others.

Oooooooooh yeah, I got internet 4 years ago now I think, but I played GTA:SA, Medal Of Honor, Call of Duty, CS 1.6 with bots, Sims 2, True Crime:NY etc...hell, I even fucked around with MS Paint. Life is good with internet, all we need is online, problems, information, curiosity, fun, everything.

Wait a fucking second, you got internet in 08? Damn, that's pretty late.

I didn't get internet until about the late 90s, which is fine because I was only about 10. And GTA-SA were the first forums I ever joined too. I remember trying to use dial-up for porn, kids these days don't know how easy they got it. You can get porn in a matter of seconds now, back then it'd take hours to see a nipple, before realising that you're actually looking at a man.

Yes i remember. We first got the internet when i was about 13, and that was just dial-up. Wasn't until i was about 16 that we got broadband. I certainly don't miss the pre-broadband days.

Wow.

Actually going to the library (physically!) and researching something you're curious about.

Calling people.

Address books and the Post Office instead of Facebook.

Using the library to get public records for that fuckin' creep 2 doors down. See if his ass is a pedo...

Actual encyclopedias. No switching from Alpha Beta-Carotene to Rwanda with a click. Instead, you could expect about 10 minutes of going to the shelf, picking up the R volume, and flipping to the back.

I guess you could call ~1500 AD to ~1990 AD "The Paper Age".

... my first username was DDP007 ... diamond dallas page and james bond all rolled into one... i was pimp...

Wow...DDP.

Blast from the past.

i had it going up during dial up days. think i started just when windows 98 came out. very basic, not much on the web. just there for minimal college research and emails. 1st movie i downloaded was about 700MB and took few days. sometimes a week.

in a way i do wish the internet didnt grow so big. its effed everyones brain up. and such a waste of time. like mine.

Did he say he bought his own intrenet?

That's exactly my point. If he was 8 in 08, his parents probably should have had internet by then, regardless of their child. And also, I doubt he is 12 years old. Maybe 14 or above, but not 12.

Yeah actually.

I got my first taste of a PC when I was 3 and after that I never actually had regular internet access until I was 6 or so. The time without it was dire. Mainly subsided by mega drive (which was basically all I did). That was the family PC and it was very poor. Probably a low end pentium 2 with 64 mb's of ram IF that. We had 25.6kb dial up for 5 years, and we enjoyed it. BT Openworld, free after 6PM so we never used it before then (we were very poor). Getting 256/64 broadband in 2005 was a god send. Runescape stopped fucking sucking. I still have the keyboard we used with it laying around somewhere, Every key had the decal worn off because it was that old.

I remember the first website I ever used. Yahooligans, followed by Mamamedia - For the record that website hasn't changed a bit since 2002. There was a game on it (roblox) that I was obsessed with. Generally my first actually internet interest i'd say.

I also used a website named Alfy which had nice stories with music. - Basically led to my ridiculously high reading age as it got into me into reading. My first website was around 2002 - A geocities one I made myself in notepad with a little help from some people online. I made my first forum in 2005 when I got my own PC with invision which taught me about as much as a free forum could about forum administration. It was a very early pentium 4 with 256 mb's of ram and a 80gb hard drive. Quite sophisticated to say it was my own PC. I had a Piczo website which generally pissed me off. I hate this era of "grab a template and make your shit". Mine was always better than the other peoples at school because I added my own (and html I pikied from places)

I remember posting on forums right after 9/11 happened, very upsetting for me I'd say. I was very unsocialable as a child and many of my friends were online, and american so I kind of identified myself as one of them. Between 2002 and 2005 I seemed to backtrack.Up until then I'd tried to use good grammar as it was pretty important back then. In 2005 I did that horrible txt speak on MSN and forums. Partially the reason I got banned from the old forums in 2005. I remember my first hotmail account had 2005 in the name, despite being created in 2002.

Maybe I'll add some more about my early online exploits later.

Cyantist... banned? I have to hear this story.

Yeah... I can remember...it was too slow all in general. I used to write letters to friends and family...Nowadays I don't, I use e-mail of course...

My first email account and my first user password got when I started High School. I hadn't PC, laptop, mobile or videogames at home. So this, I had to do all my tasks at High School...You had to ask for the PC...there were schedules and you had to do reservations...PC's were the slowest I've never seen...I played videogames at friend's houses because they had platforms as Spectrum, Atari, Amiga500, PC2086, PC4086 and so on...Later I got many kind of multimedia and videoganes platforms....

Few years ago...It was another world...
