My new computer works wonderfully and runs games at max settings with about 30 FPS. Only problem is my router is old and I want to replace it with a new one I got but my mom is wired to it because her computer is rather old. The new router has no option to run an ethernet out.

Do they sell USB wifi cards or something for computers with no wifi?

Decided I'm making a setup video at 500 subs.

Is her a PC or a tower?

She has an HP from like 2005. Still has XP and shit on it, probably ridden with viruses from when I first discovered the real internet (aka porn).

Anyway, I'm going to clean it out, maybe install 7 on there.

"54mbps wireless pci card"

this is what you want. Plug it in to the pci slot with the computer turned off, turn computer on, install drivers from CD that will come with it.

A new router with no lan ports? Take it back and get this instead: http://www.newegg.co...CFcN_QgodSU4Aug

I'm not sure what kind of internet connection you have, but if your router is old, your modem is also probably pretty old so i would consider a new modem aswell, if it is cable. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16825124006 .

Also, that thing Cyantist linked too looks like it might do more harm to your computer than good. 5 dollars for a wifi card. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. If your stuck with wireless, http://store.linksys...CFbF_QgodXV4AJA

It's an apple airport express, I got it for free from my grandpa and it's practically brand new (he got the extreme a few weeks later). I really don't have the money for a new router. Maybe a modem but that's it.

they're fucking wireless cards, they're cheap and easy to produce so china flooded the mass market with them.

no capacitors to go bad (what china would be most likely to cheap out on). The Real-tech RT2561ST is the most commonly used wireless chipset and there are no widespread issues with it (usually pebcak shit like drivers arent installed or using linux and it doesnt work out of the box, static'd it up on installation etc)

I actually have a different card (same chipset) that was yanked out of a dead computer and works fine in another one. Zero point in splashing out on a fancy wireless card for a 8 year old computer.

funnily enough that router and modem you suggested both have issues with the chipset it uses overheating and dropping connection for split seconds every so often. Those typical white netgear modems get so hot they singe the plastic.

Hmm, im note sure about the modem, since i was mainly looking for a docsys 3.0 modem (i have a motorolla) but the router is excellent. I've used it for about a year with no issues.

I would still opt for a usb wireless adapter, rather than a pci one.

I had the same one mentioned in the video and it was absolutely baking on the floor, after a few days of use I put it up on my desk and improvement was absolutely minimum. Got upgraded to a superhub by my ISP and was going to sell it on eBay before I opened it up to find it was absolutely baked inside (literally, top side of the plastic was almost completely brown.) and didn't want it to end up crapping out.

Well then, stick to motorolla modems... I think i got mine for 59 which is about 20 bucks cheaper anyway,

Also, that card you suggested doesnt support wireless n... Range/bandwith is a lot better with n, and i'd assume the airport supports n.

Actually, brian..

Looks like the airpor does have a lan port...

Sorry about that, real rookie error, I've always used g cards because the only devices that use wireless in my house are in the same room as the router.

Here's an N card anyway:

Christmas lights of the same color, placed under translucent white plexiglass, make for great low-budget, Tron-style bars of light.

I have a big roll of those in a box in my attic I got years back, looks to be about $300 worth of gear but the solder joints are all fucked up or something, probably just need reflowing but I dont have my antex tip, leaded solder or even the fumes mask anymore.
