Psy 350 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 Most of Rockstar's games are heavily influenced by movies with a similar storyline or genre. I'd say GTA3 was in some part based on Gone In 60 Seconds, Vice City was based heavily on Scarface, San Andreas was based on a number of movies such as Boys N The Hood and stuff... Red Dead Redemption was influenced by a number of western/cowboy movies... What could GTA5 be based on? Obviously it depends where the game is set and which year it's set in, but by considering the possible movies which could influence Rockstar, we may be able to come up with the setting or storyline I currently have no ideas, but that's for you guys to come up with. Although I did see "From Paris With Love" last night and I think something like that has quite a big GTA feel to it.
Qdeathstar 1763 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 I'm thinking "Hot Tub Time Machine" is a good move to reference for any game.
Handsome B Wonderful 331 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 ^lol Some possible influences that would be good: (Note: Links contain spoilers. But you wouldn't be reading unless you wanted to know the plot, anyway) No Country For Old Men - A 'modern' western set in the 80's. It would probably be a bit similar to RDR style-wise, though. Which is a good thing. Animal Kingdom - It's an Aussie film, so no one here would have seen it, but the plot would make a good basis for a GTA. Oh, and 'Big Momma's House'. Because the only thing funnier than a film about a black man dressed as a fat black lady is actually playing a game about a black man dressed as a fat black lady.
Edgecrusher 91 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 I can't really think of just one film which I'd like to see inspiration from, but off the top of my head, here's a few: Football Factory The Firm (original with Gary Oldman, not that shitty new version) The Business Rock 'N' Rolla A History Of Violence The Departed Rise Of The Footsoldier Sexy Beast Kidulthood/Adulthood Lucky Number Slevin Smokin' Aces
DuPz0r 5361 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 Let's back track for a second: What i'm going to do here is compile a list of films that have inspired GTA. If you know of any, please post and i'll add it to the list.Carlito's Way, (1993) Al Pacino - Carlito 'Charlie' Brigante. Sean Penn - David Kleinfeld. Penelope Ann Miller - Gail John Leguizamo - Benny Blanco I've not seen this film mentioned on here before tbh. I've only seen it for the first time myself just today, and damn, what an awesome film it is! Ken Rosenberg in Vice City was based on David Kleinfeld in this Movie! Scarface, (1983) Al Pacino - Tony Montana Steven Bauer - Manny Ribera Michelle Pfeifferr - Elvira Hancock Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio- Gina Montana Robert Loggia- Frank Lopez Scarface heavily influenced Vice city. Grand Theft Auto, (1977) Ron Howard - Sam Freeman Nancy Morgan - Paula Powers I've never seen this movie, but obviously GTA got its name from somewhere. I think it's about stealing and wrecking cars... lol Heat, (1995) Robert De Niro - Neil McCauley Al Pacino - Lt. Vincent Hanna Val Kilmer - Chris Shiherlis Jon Voight - Nate Tom Sizemore - Michael Cheritto R*n used it for the bank job mission in IV. Casino, (1995) Robert De Niro - Sam 'Ace' Rothstein Sharon Stone - Ginger McKenna Joe Pesci - Nicky Santoro James Woods - Lester Diamond GTA:SA had some reference to Casino. New Jack City, (1991) Wesley Snipes - Nino Brown Ice-T - Scotty Appleton (as Ice T) Allen Payne - Gee Money Chris Rock - Pookie The crack "palace" that Smoke lives in - in San Andreas, looks exactly like the Carter Apartment Buildings, crack dealer Nino Brown's headquarters in this 1991 similarly themed film. Menace II Society, (1993) Tyrin Turner - Caine Larenz Tate - O-Dog Samuel L. Jackson - Tat Lawson There are numerous references to this film in GTA:SA, especially Grove street, and the whole ghetto thing. To Live and Die in L.A., (1985) William Petersen - Richard Chance Willem Dafoe - Eric 'Rick' Masters John Pankow - John Vukovich The whole counterfeiting aspect In GTA:VC is based on this movie. A song also from the movie (Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung) is in the game. Also, there is a car chase in GTA:SA that is clearly a homage to Live and Die in L.A. The scenery and the action, etc. Cop Land, (1997) Sylvester Stallone - Freddy Heflin Harvey Keitel - Ray Donlan Ray Liotta - Gary Figgis Robert De Niro - Moe Tilden Not so much inspiration, more of a cross reference. Ray Liotta plays Tommy in Vice City, and Cop Land is also the name of a mission in Vice City. Snatch, (2000) Jason Statham - Turkish Benicio Del Toro - Franky Four Fingers Brad Pitt - Mickey O'Neil Alan Ford - Brick Top The main inspiration for IV DLC. The Diamond and the way they blend each characters stories into the main game. High Noon, (1952) Gary Cooper - Marshal Will Kane Thomas Mitchell - Mayor Jonas Henderson Lloyd Bridges - Deputy Marshal Harvey Pell Katy Jurado - Helen RamĂrez Inspired GTA:IV's Story. Niko's struggle to make choices through-out. Speed, (1994) Keanu Reeves - Officer Jack Traven Dennis Hopper - Howard Payne Sandra Bullock - Annie Porter Joe Morton - Capt. McMahon In GTA:VC, there is a mission where you're not allowed to slow down until you defuse the bomb, otherwise it'll blow. Easy Rider, (1969) Peter Fonda - Wyatt Dennis Hopper - Billy Antonio Mendoza - Jesus In GTA:SA, Peter Fonda's character - The Truth, is a parody of the one he played in Easy Rider. Post Your GTA films, and we'll know where to find them! There is a lot of decent gangster orientated films referenced here. I think they have to bring back the Mafia element to GTA at some point... Here is a list of films i think will be nice to see reference to in the next GTA: Pulp Fiction Layer Cake Reservoir Dogs Donnie Brasco Gangster No.1 Public Enemies Gangs of New York (but in present day context) True Grit I'll think of more later.
Psy 350 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 That's a pretty awesome list Dup, nice one. I'll see if I can add some to it when I get a chance.
DuPz0r 5361 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks. I wrote that a while back on the old forums, and thought it had some relevance to this. Unless you mean the current list i want in GTA5. But thanks for that too lol.
TreeFitty 2631 Report post Posted March 28, 2011 I think the Jason Bourne movies could have some influence since 90% of the content was GTA in real life.
Holocaust 14 Report post Posted March 30, 2011 Layer Cake and Football Factory. Layer Cake for the drugs scene and Football Factory for the booze/drugs/gang-life/sex scene. Fuck it, set the actual game in England.
DuPz0r 5361 Report post Posted March 30, 2011 Does anyone else think whole Niko character was loosely based around Don Vito Corleone from the Godfather? Came in to the country on a boat as an immigrant, and had nothing to begin with. Then he worked his way up earning respect. Kind of rags to riches. But Niko seems quiet and dangerous like Corleone rather than the over-ego'd Tony Montana.
Post-traumatic amnesia 499 Report post Posted March 30, 2011 Each time I see Gangs of New York, the gangs reminds me of San Andreas. Although the era is completely different (the film being set to the 1860s), I do see some similarity, most notably gang rivalry.
Indy 350 Report post Posted April 17, 2011 They only seem to take influence from classics. However, take a look at the synopsis for the movie Elite Squad 2 (IMDB 8.5): After a bloody invasion of the BOPE in the High-Security Penitentiary Bangu 1 in Rio de Janeiro to control a rebellion of interns, the Lieutenant-Colonel Roberto Nascimento and the second in command Captain André Matias are accused by the Human Right Aids member Diogo Fraga of execution of prisoners. Matias is transferred to the corrupted Military Police and Nascimento is exonerated from the BOPE by the Governor. However, due to the increasing popularity of Nascimento, the Governor invites him to team-up with the intelligence area of the Secretary of Security. Along the years, Fraga, who is married with Nascimento's former wife, is elected State Representative and Nascimento's son Rafael has issues with his biological father. Meanwhile Nascimento and the BOPE expel the drug dealers from several slums but another enemy arises: the militia led by Major Rocha and supported by the Governor, the Secretary of Security and politicians interested in votes. Nascimento is manipulated to help this group, vanquishing the criminals in the slums and poor communities; then the corrupt group of police officers is free to exploit the poor population I think a spin on this could make an excellent storyline.
