I would love to see street gangs return, The Ballas, Grove Street Families, Los Santos Vagos, Varios Los Aztecas... Dynamic gang-fights throught LS would be awesome. I would really love to drive into the Grove Street Culdesac and see The Johnsons house, with GSF members hanging around... I really hope there is a gang system where you are able to take over territories like in SA, especially with RAGE physics. But if the protagonist is Caucasian as he sounds in the trailer, I doubt he will be a member of these gangs. Maybe a new gang will arise, who knows.

How do you feel about Street gangs in Los Santos? In my opinion that's what makes the city what it is.

I think gangs may make a return but they won't be the emphasis of the storyline. Whether the old SA gangs return is another matter. It would be a nice homage to see the GSF and the Ballas once again, but I don't think any reference should be made to CJ or any of the other SA characters. Maybe some old graffitti saying "CJ 4eva" or something, but that's it.

Imagine the main protagonist won't be in a gang, or from the start anyway as the speaker on the trailer had just moved into the area, and I'm presuming the main protagonist will be him or related (Son etc.)

Exactly, if the protagonist is a 40 year old white guy - which i'm still doubting TBH - It would be rather unrealistic for him to be in a street gang. He'll be more "organised crime" ala the mafia. However I can see a mission where he causes friction between two street gangs to further his cause or create a distraction or something along those lines.

I still think the guy in the suit (vercetti according to some people..bullshit) will be like Henry Hill (ironically played by Ray Liotta) at the end of Goodfellas where he gets moved to an undisclosed location, but you work on behalf of him because he's in witness/informant protection

I think Street gangs should return. I remember how fun it was, specially if you played without cheats!

The gang wars should be like a mode in multiplayer, 4 vs 4. And you got like 10 minutes to find what you needed, and then you meet up and fight!

or something like that :D

didnt the lost and damed have turf wars?? i would imagine V is going to have something similar... perhaps your character can go incognito, ala RDR, and dress up like a gang member...

but yes, this is LA, there has to be street gangs... probably not the ones fron san an, but probably similar ones... thete has to be a latin gang and a thug gang... hell, throw some white supremesists(sp?) in there as well...

Why couldn't the old gangs exist? The Crips and Surenos have been active for over 50 years, and the Bloods 40... It's only been 20 years since San Andreas, so what's ruling out these gangs from still existing? Obviously not with Sweet and CJ, but a new generation, possibly with a mention of "OG Carl Johnson"

More or less it would be the same reason that Liberty City in III and Liberty City in IV had different gangs and Mafia families. For that reason I think they'll have new gang names that fill the same slot, but start over from a storyline perspective.

I have to agree with Bones on this one, GTA 3 era is dead and gone, they will be looking to create new gangs and characters, like Viceman said be nice to see a bit of grafitti with CJ but to have him metioned is a little silly, but saying that Laslow is mentioned in IV so they haven't killed off all the characters.

Lazlow IS Grand Theft Auto Radio, in and of himself. He's not going anywhere. :)

He wrote Chatterbox in III

Co-wrote all the stations in Vice, San Andreas and IV

And he appeared in Liberty City & Vice City Stories.

I never questioned the dude he is awesome was just pointing out they brought him back so I think to say no other character is back is a little rash, besides didnt I hear that Young Maylay was scripting with R* if so could be possible radio interviews with CJ afterall he was manager of Madd Dogg, possible tracks from Madd Dogg to I guess.

Allow me to rephrase, Lazlow isn't an actual character per se. Hes one of the main production guys creating almost every radio station since III.

Young Maylay or Ray Liotta were hired to voice a character that actually appeared in the game's world as someone you could play as or interact with.

When they created IV they hit the reset button on the entire GTA universe, basically deleting almost every event and all of the people the older games were set around, but leaving in Lazlow (who helps make the games) and their fictitious companies like Sprunk and the Bank of Liberty.

In IV's Liberty City, the Forelli Family and the Leone Family never existed. Delete GTA III. There would be no Sonny Forelli to send Tommy to Vice City. Delete Vice City. There would be no Leones trying to take complete control of the casino in San Andreas, or basically the entire last 3rd of the game's plot. Also no Joey Leone for CJ to work for back in Liberty City in the late 80s/early 90s. Delete San Andreas.

Face it, we've started over.

And he had Integrity 2.0 in IV, where he's out on the streets interviewing the public.

Lazlow isn't just a character though, he's a real boy. He'll always be an integral part to Grand Theft Auto's radios.

Any way, back on topic.. I'm sure gangs will be in San Andreas but we might not have any interaction with them... R* said it all in their statement.

"Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California."

There might be a little interaction at most, like Vicey said.. mixing shit up for our own gain. But you don't fool around with street gangs in this GTA's universe, trying to get hold of 'the almighty dollar'.

The only references to old characters is the graffiti in the Broker safe house. I'll try and find the statement where they said nobody from the GTA III generation will be returning.

yeah they said they won't return in IV but I dont think they announced that they never existed therefore can't feature in a GTA game ever again, I think you guys are being a little rash, and if we all know R* they give us surprises all the time.

IV / this generation of GTA games, same difference at the time of the statement... I don't see why it's a concern any way. They were epic characters who had their stories and conclusions. R* keep on creating epic characters and will continue to.. If any characters from the old generation are confirmed as returning before pre orders are out, I'll buy you a collectors edition of V. I'm that sure of them keeping this new direction. (you might wanna bookmark that in case I am wrong...)

Im neither saying there will or won't be but im just saying I dont think R* catergorically denied that they will ever be back, thats just not R* style, and to say they never existed in this universe is a major thing, me personally I dont mind if characters come back or not, I liked Niko as a main character doesn't mean i want to form a super team and take over the world :D

Dan Houser: "virtually none of the characters from the previous games returned, as a lot of them are dead anyway."

virtually (adv) - 1: almost entirely - 2: for all practical purposes

They aren't coming back. Just looking at IV shows you that in this universe of GTA games they never existed. You don't need Rockstar to tell you that, you only need to look at the game itself. And for that matter in the universe where they did most of them are dead.

Besides, like Ast said, their stories are over. They were epic and exciting, but we've reached the end of their narrative, and to try and messily add on to it now would only serve to degrade it.

I think Latino gangs are more prominent these days than they were back during San Andreas days. i think if any gangs make an appearance, it will be more likely south American gangs. Obviously black dope slingers too.

seriously I don't mean to be a pain in the ass here I'm just pointing out that nowhere has R* games said they didnt exist in the IV era, I dont want them to come back but that doesn't mean that there wont be a radio mention or something and lets be fair R* have done crazier things, and I dont see how IV shows me that, because its not mentioned doesn't mean it did not exist and it would of degraded if this era of games are draped in GTA 3 game history I know that, I'm just saying its not something that is ridiculous, R* can do anything they please and they were right virually none of the characters were in GTA IV and alot of them would be dead as they were killed by you which is the majority of the bad guys, but the ones who are alive might get a mention even if its GTA XXI.

Ok, this is the last time, then I'm stopping cause I don't have all day to keep repeating myself.

We don't need Rockstar to hold our hand and tell us that they don't exist in the IV era. Just look around IVs Liberty City.

So 'why don't they exist?' Because their world doesn't exist. IV's Liberty City is nothing like the one from III. The new Los Santos is almost nothing like the one from SA.

Going over it again, in IV there was no Leone Family. There had never been a Leone family. In their place were all new Mafia families that took the same place in the world but were all new to us. The same thing goes for the new GTA V.

The stories and the world of the III generation are over. They had a good long run but it was time to start from scratch in order to tell new stories with new people. We don't need them anymore.

and Asthenia I couldn't accept another mans GTA copy its not right its like taking someones child :D plus between you and me I don't think there will be characters returning.

Op I'm not saying we do need them, and yes the games have been upgraded all I'm saying is that if R* didnt want any mention of the GTA 3 era again they would of said exactly what you just said, and GTA IV takes place over a decade since GTA 3 anyway so no they wont talk about Catalina and Leone's, you are basically saying that no reference or appearance of any GTA 3 character will possibly happen ever full stop I think thats a pretty bold statement to make when you have rockstar saying VIRTUALLY no characters will be returning (talking about IV) that to me doesnt say GTA 3 era is dead and buried and no further mention of them will be had
