I think it depends on what you're listening to it on. GTA IV sounded shit until I got some Logitech speakers & played GTA IV again. It sounded good in my opinion. But it does need to vary in car & weapon sounds.

That's what the point is...

The music & songs in IV were not bad but weapons & car sounds were not impressive but actually shitty. Most of the time in the game we keep driving the car & keep firing. So these two types of sounds are very important than anything else. Also it need to be vary car to car & same for weapons. So if the car & weapon sounds cant impress us then it is really disappointing....

That's not really Fair. I like the sound the Desert Eagle made when I shot some random pedestrian in the face. It always sounded and felt pretty good.

GTA lV overall had a much gritier feel to it compared to the past GTA's. But they definitely need to improve the SMG and Assault Rifle sounds, because they sound like toys.

And the cars sounded alright, but in GTA V I want to have a tuned supercharged muscle car and just make that shit roar. You should be able to really hear the power of the engine. Also maybe a rumble feature ( on the controller ) for the more suped up engines, so you can actually feel the vibration when you rev the engine.

I agree. But most of the times we use SMG & assault rifles. Those sounded very bad in IV like toys.

Yah I've been complaining about the car sounds for years.

Especially for cars like the Dukes, and the sounds for the choppers like the hellfury

they all sounded like fucking electric cars or something. I dont know what the fuck they were thinking when they made those sounds.

If you have a look to GTA IV trailers and listen the gun sounds, they sound pretty good, but in the actual game they doesn't? Hopefully this won't be repeated in V.

I really hope so. If they show something about 'action' in 2nd trailer (if & when it comes) then we may know, if the gun sounds are better or not....

San Andreas's sound effects were just stock sfx they probably paid for from somewhere. The sound from when you crash into a metal fence is the same one as when you grind a fence in THUG.

I always wondered why some films/games have the same sound effects as others.

It saves time and is a lot cheaper, such as the 'Wilhelm scream' and there is one with a crowd cheering that I've heard while playing Tonka on my old computer to watching TV recently.

The other day I was watching a featurette in 'The Dark Knight's' Special Features.

There was a part which focused on the sound effects in the movie, and how they wanted to ramp it up more than any other movie had ever done before. Some of which I think Rockstar should consider when approaching GTA V's sound design.

For instance; remember the part where the joker climbs out of the overturned truck after the main chase sequence, and he starts firing his M 76 Sub Machine Gun at the cars. Here the sound department replaced the actual sound that the M 76 would make with that of an GAU-8 Avenger Minigun to maximise it's impact, and make The Joker seem like a more dangerous adversary when Batman charges him with the Batpod.

Also the scene in which Bruce Wayne is recreating a fingerpint from the shattered bullet he took from the apartment with the dead cops. Where he uses the Auto-Firing Minigun on the targets, here they replaced the Minigun's normal firing sound with that of an Artillery Cannon.

So basically all of this made every action in the movie that much more Aggresive and Dynamic, and gave every bullet fired more Impact and Resonance. This not only drew you further into the action but made it feel like it had a lot more purpose ( as opposed to a lot of other other mindless action movies, which have very little impact in their action scenes ).

To me the sound design in video games like in movies, is very important. And if video games want to move forward and be taken seriously by the wider majority of people, guns need to start sounding more meaty and realistic, and less like the toy cap guns that they sound like now.

Sound Design can make or break a game's success, just like it can a movies. I mean have you ever watched a movie or played a game with the sound muted, and evaluated the difference made. It's almost as bad as playing a game or watching a movie with your eyes closed. Yet people mostly stress that a game's visuals must be perfect, and think of the audio as secondary to it and less important.

A game's sound has a massive impact on the overall experience you have.

So I think this time around that Rockstar should be more focused on making GTA V's sound have more of an impact than the past iterations of GTA. They should really look for ways to make the in-game sound effects better, from Car Engines to Gun Fire, from Hand-To-Hand Combat to NPC Dialogue. I mean if they made their sound effects similar in impact to what the Sound Design Team did in 'The Dark Knight', GTA V could sound unbelievably good. :D

The sound effects should be much more detailed than they were in iv.

for example. When you shoot your gun, you should be able to hear the empty shell hit the pavement.

yea, that'd be pretty interesting.

Realistic sounds in general e:g walking, perhaps falling from a building and hearing the effect of broken bones

I can hear that in real life.

The walking, i mean.

Some sound effects may be drowned out, since this is first GTA with actual background music. I don't know whether this will be good or bad though, some games have very good background music like assassins creed, but with GTA it's hard to imagine playing with background music.

Actual sounds in GTA are decent, though they need more variation with engine sounds.

Luckily background music will only play durring acceptable points durring missions to kind of raise your level of immersion into the energy and feelings the devs want you to feel. Other than that music will only be present when it's playing from something like a radio, so I don't think we have to worry much about this being anything but an improvement.

The sounds in gta have always been acceptable, but nothing I'd I've ever consider as good. Like in gta 4 the guns sound like cap guns and reving engines sound like smart cars.. I'm sure guns will be sounding good in gta 5 because they sounded great in max payne 3. Still worried how cars will sound though.
